Short answer
Quote requests are welcome from the City of London and nearby communities, including St. Thomas, Strathroy-Caradoc, Komoka and Dorchester. Each belongs to a different municipality with its own permit and driveway rules, so always check with the municipality that covers your address.
London, Ontario
Most of this site is written for the City of London, where the City publishes specific rules for driveway widening, front-yard parking, boulevard approvals and curb cuts. Start with the services overview for a new or replacement driveway, or the widening permit guide if you want to change a width.
London also includes communities that are neighbourhoods inside the city, such as Lambeth, where the City of London's rules apply. If your address is in Lambeth or another part of the city, follow the London guidance on this site.
Nearby communities
Outside the City of London, driveway entrances, boulevards and permits are governed by different municipalities. These pages explain what is different about each.
Concrete in St. Thomas
An independent city and the seat of Elgin County, with its own municipal rules and many older homes.
Concrete in Strathroy-Caradoc
A municipality about 35 km west of London, formed in 2001, with sandy soils in parts of its area.
Concrete in Komoka
A growing community in Middlesex Centre, with newer subdivisions and its own municipal approvals.
Concrete in Dorchester
A village in Thames Centre, just east of London, with the Thames River running through it.
Other communities
Requests are also welcome from other communities in the area, including Ilderton, which like Komoka is part of the Municipality of Middlesex Centre. If your community is not listed, send a request and mention your address so it can be routed to the right place. Rules for rural roads and county roads can differ again, so ask the municipality whether an entrance permit is required.
Why the municipality matters
| Question | Who decides |
|---|---|
| Driveway width and entrance location | The municipality your property is in (and the road authority, if a county or provincial road). |
| Curb cuts and boulevard work | The municipality, often through public works or engineering. |
| Building permits for structures | The municipal building department. |
| Utility locates before digging | Utility locate services; ask your contractor to arrange them. |
Do not assume the City of London's limits apply outside the city. Always ask your own municipality.
